'Debate me like a man,' Galloway tells immigration minister in speech
By Allison Jones And Colin Perkel, The Canadian Press TORONTO - A defiant George Galloway took direct aim at Canada's immigration minister in a speech Monday night for being branded a terrorism supporter and being denied entry to the country. "Come out and debate me like a man, Jason Kenney," Galloway said in a speech broadcast from New York. "Let's book the biggest hall in Canada and you and I will debate these issues of war and peace, of freedom of speech and censorship and you won't be able to hide behind your spokesman." The Canada Border Services Agency advised Galloway, in a letter dated March 20, that he had been deemed inadmissible to Canada on the grounds he allegedly engaged in terrorist activities. The MP has denied such links although he has openly voiced support for the Palestinian cause, delivered financial aid to Gaza and gave $45,000 to the head of Hamas, a banned terrorist organization in Canada. In a speech brimming with statements spewed directly at Kenney, Galloway said it was "poetic justice" that Kenney's attempt to silence him backfired so wholeheartedly. "People all around the world watching this live are going to learn what you tried to stop me (from) saying," Galloway said. The hour-long speech focused on Afghanistan, Israeli-Palestinian conflicts and Kenney and the Canadian government. Organizers also said the publicity surrounding the decision to keep Galloway out of Canada appeared to help boost support and ticket sales. "Thank you, Mr. Kenney, for helping to promote our cause," organizer James Clark said in front of the crowd of hundreds at a church in downtown Toronto. Clark said because of the interest generated by the controversy, halls were rented in 20 cities across the country for people to watch the broadcast of the speech, as well as in Greece and the U.S. In Toronto, Candace Livingstone, 40, said she only bought her ticket after hearing about the story on the news. "I didn't even know (of) George Galloway until all this came about," she said before the speech. "I thought, 'Wow, I can't believe this is happening in Canada."' Galloway will also make speeches via video to crowds in Mississauga, Ont., Ottawa and Montreal in the coming days. A Federal Court decision Monday upheld the ban on Galloway after Galloway supporters asked court on Sunday for an emergency injunction allowing him to come, pending the possibility of a judicial review of the government's position. However, Justice Luc Martineau ruled Monday he was not in a position to allow Galloway into the country although he did say there were "serious issues to be tried" if the judicial review occurs. "The arguments raised by the applicants are not frivolous or vexatious," Martineau ruled. "However, a proper factual record and the benefit of full legal argument . . . are lacking at the present time." The decision represented a "partial victory" in that the court did recognize there was a serious issue at stake, Clark said. "We want to pursue and examine all the questions that have come up about how and why the (border agency) peremptorily issued this ruling of inadmissibility to Mr. Galloway," Clark said. During his speech Galloway vigorously denied any suggestion he is a terrorist, saying he gave money and aid to help the people of Gaza, not for terrorism. "I am not a supporter of Hamas," he said. "But I am a supporter of democracy." Galloway's supporters say he gave money to the head of the government in Gaza but not to the head of Hamas, even though they are the same person. Canadian Jewish Congress CEO Bernie Farber said the fact Galloway would still broadcast what he had to say showed that free speech was not at stake. In a release, the congress said Canadians understand that "fundraising for international terrorism puts us all at risk here at home." "Canada must not be regarded as a piggybank for international terrorist financiers like George Galloway," the release stated. Clark called the suggestion that Galloway was soliciting Canadian donations to support terrorism "absurd." The money raised by the events will go toward organizing them, logistics for the video feeds for Galloway, and a possible legal challenge, Clark said. "Beyond that, we are unapologetic if we do decide to fundraise for the people of Gaza," he said. "It's not illegal in this country or around the world to raise funds for humanitarian relief." About 500 people filled a downtown church for the broadcast of the speech Monday. Tickets were $15 with a discount for students and seniors. The government, in its letter to Galloway, did not make the allegation that he was coming to Canada to raise funds for terrorism. Galloway wrapped up his speech chastizing the Canadian government for its positions on the Middle East and for its mission in Afghanistan. "I love your country and what it used to stand for," Galloway said. "Canada used to stand for something in the world - for peace." The British legislator is no stranger to controversy. In 2007, the British Parliament's lower house suspended him based on accusations he concealed his financial dealings with deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein's government. Galloway was suspended for 18 days following an investigation which found that a charity he set up was partly funded by the now-executed Iraqi dictator. He accused his opponents of hypocrisy, saying none of the political parties in the House had ever asked people who gave them money where it came from. In 2005, Galloway created a spectacle on Capitol Hill by denouncing U.S. senators while voluntarily testifying under oath before the committee. He called the panel of senators a "lickspittle Republican committee" and accused them of "the mother of all smoke screens." After he was expelled from the Labour party for urging British soldiers not to fight in Iraq, Galloway formed his own party, Respect, and won re-election to the Commons in 2005.

Luke Rudkowski Framed in “Classic Set-up” Kurt Nimmo Calling in to the Alex Jones show today, WeAreChange founder and political activist Luke Rudkowski said he was set-up for arrest at the Hilton Hotel on Manhattan last Saturday. Luke was at the hotel in order to ask New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg about his refusal to help with the medical costs of 9/11 first responders. Bloomberg had promised to address the issue but has since ignored the pleas of WeAreChange and others to help first responders. Rudkowski said Bloomberg's security detail and hotel security claimed he would not leave the hotel. Luke told Jones he asked to leave the premise on numerous occasions and was not allowed to do so. Anthony Verias, who accompanied Rudkowski, told Alex they were victims of a “classic set-up.” Verias was assaulted and brought into an office where he was subjected to intimidation and harassment by hotel security and Bloomberg's plainclothes “goons,” as Anthony described them.Luke said fellow WeAreChange activist Manny Valencia was assaulted as he taped Rudkowski's arrest and his camera was confiscated. Rudkowski said conditions at Manhattan Central Booking are deplorable. He said the holding cells were overcrowded with overflowing toilets and infested with cockroaches. Corrections officers told Rudkowski because his case is political his files would be lost and his court appearance delayed. The police would not return WeAreChange cameras and video footage because they consider it evidence in a criminal case. Luke was told he would have to go through the District Attorney and his lawyers to get the footage and equipment returned. Police told Rudkowski the videotapes may be erased. Rudkowski said police were generally supportive and helpful even though the police did not offer vouchers for WeAreChange equipment and videotapes. Rudkowski asked for the vouchers. Luke faces a trial in two months on a charge of criminal trespass. Rudkowski, Manny Valencia, and Anthony Verias will appear later this evening on the Infowarrior show with Jason Bermas.
U.K.'s Galloway Loses Appeal to Make Speech in Canada (Update2) By Joe Schneider March 30 (Bloomberg) -- George Galloway , a member of the U.K. Parliament, failed to persuade a Canadian judge to overturn a government decision denying him entry into the country. Federal Court Judge Luc Martineau today refused to let Galloway, 54, into Canada to make a speech in Toronto at a forum called “Resisting War from Gaza to Kandahar.” He was also scheduled to speak in Mississauga, Ontario, tomorrow, Montreal on April 1 and Ottawa on April 2. The Canadian government denied Galloway entry into the country earlier this month, accusing him of engaging in terrorist activities with a 25,000 pound ($35,000) contribution to the Hamas government in Gaza. Hamas is a banned terrorist organization in Canada. “Your material support for this organization makes you inadmissable to Canada,” an official from the Canadian Immigration section wrote to Galloway on March 20, according to an excerpt cited by Martineau. “We have information that indicates you organized a convoy worth over 1 million British pounds in aid and vehicles, and personally donated vehicles and financing to Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniya .” Haniya became prime minister following the 2006 election of Hamas. He was fired in 2007 by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas . Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney upheld his department's decision last week. U.S. Tour Galloway, who has been in Canada before, is on a speaking tour in the U.S. The Toronto Coalition to Stop the War, which argued on Galloway's behalf yesterday before Martineau, said Galloway will deliver his speech in Toronto through a live broadcast from New York. Martineau said whether Galloway's participation in the convoy to Gaza and financial support for the government make him inadmissable should be decided at trial. Until then, “I am not ready to exempt Mr. Galloway from the application” of Canada's immigration law, Martineau wrote in his 12-page ruling. Galloway set up the Respect Party in the U.K. after he was thrown out of the Labour Party in 2003 for urging U.K. soldiers not to fight in Iraq. The case is In the Matter of the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War v. Minister of Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness, IMM-1474-09, Federal Court of Canada (Ottawa). "OBAMANATION" political song by Ash Soular
AIG director named to Obama tax task forceWASHINGTON (CNN) -- One of the people named this week to President Obama's new Task Force on Tax Reform is a member of the AIG board of directors. Martin Feldstein , a professor of economics at Harvard University, has been on the board of American International Group since 1988. He also was a prominent economic adviser to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. Asked about the AIG connection, a senior administration official said Friday that the White House declined to comment on the story. Like the others named to the tax reform task force, Feldstein also serves on Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board, which is headed by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker.

A CBC - Radio Canada Investigative Report. The Braidwood Inquiry into the death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski at the Vancouver Airport has revealed that he died after receiving 5 taser shocks from an RCMP officer. CBC The National along with the Radio-Canada program “Enquete” have looked at the issue of multiple stuns and whether or not they increase the risk of death. It appears that while researchers and politicians are recommending more restrictions on repeated stuns, the RCMP has decided to go in the opposite direction. Frédéric Zalac reports. ***FLASHBACK*** RCMP officer in deadly DUI crash was also involved in taser death Original air date: October 28th, 2008
Canada's hypocrisy: George W. Bush permitted, George Galloway banned by Lech Biegalski Those who stand for nothing will fall for anythingOn March 17, 2009, George W. Bush was allowed to enter Canada and give a speech to the business community in Calgary. His arrival was accepted by the Canadian government which completely ignored the Letter to the RCMP issued by the Lawyers Against the War organization. On March 21, 2009, the BBC reported , “George Galloway, a British member of Parliament, has been banned from Canada on security grounds. /…/ British media reported the decision was due to his views on Afghanistan and the presence of Canadian troops there.” Shortly after George Galloway was denied entry to Canada to speak at an anti-war event in Toronto, The Canadian Press reported that several organizations expressed their appreciation of the government's decision: “The Canadian Jewish Congress quickly issued a statement commending the government for its decision. “We applaud the Canadian government for keeping George Galloway, a man who thrives on his support of terrorists, out of Canada,” said CJC Co-President Sylvain Abitbol. “George Galloway publicly brags about his moral and, in some cases financial, support for internationally recognized terrorist organizations including Hamas, Hezbollah and the Taliban. He proudly flaunts his own nation's laws and dares Western states to prosecute him for his support of terrorists. He is clearly a risk to Canadians,” he added. “B'nai Brith Canada also endorsed the government's action.” Bernie Farber, the CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress, was available for an interview on the Sympatico MSN Network. Farber described Galloway as a supporter of “terrorism.” By quoting Galloway's statements out of political context and by presenting Hamas and Hezbollah as “terrorist organizations” out of historical context, Farber has shown a very limited ability to indoctrinate his audience. Using President Obama's words, “The only place that might work is at Hollywood.” According to The Canadian Press , the organizers of the event expressed an opposite opinion: “This is a full frontal attack on free speech in Canada, and one that all supporters of civil liberties must challenge,” said James Clark from the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War. “Kenney's ban is an unprecedented move to censor someone whose views are critical of our own government's foreign policy. We will not accept this ban, and we plan on challenging it.” The political reaction was divided: In Winnipeg, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said he didn't agree with Galloway's views. “We let into Canada all kinds of people who say ridiculous and absurd things and Galloway has said his share of ridiculous and absurd things. The issue … is whether the security services know something about George Galloway that I don't,” he said. “The minister of immigration is becoming the minister of censorship,” NDP immigration critic Olivia Chow said. “We don't have to agree with everything Mr. Galloway talks about. “But, at bare minimum, they should be allowed to express their points of view so Canadians can make decisions themselves. This is pure censorship and it's wrong.” George Galloway has been an outspoken peace activist, an opponent of the war in Iraq, the occupation of Afghanistan, the occupation of Palestine, and the Israeli massacres in Lebanon and Gaza.

George W. Bush Protest - Calgary
Splitting the Sky arrested while attempting a citizen's arrest on George W. Bush
Canada breaking the law by hosting war crimes suspect George W. BushBy John Mcnamer, The Province March 18, 2009 The Canadian government has knowingly allowed the violation of both Canadian domestic law and international human-rights law by failing to stop former U.S. president George W. Bush from crossing the border for a paid speaking engagement with a private Calgary audience. Many competent international authorities have concluded that the available evidence establishes that Bush and the Bush administration committed torture and other war crimes and crimes against humanity. Therefore Canada now has a duty to condemn, investigate, prosecute and punish those crimes. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Attorney General Rob Nicholson and other responsible ministers were notified on March 11 of specific evidence clearly demonstrating there are reasonable grounds to believe Mr. Bush has been complicit in torture and other war crimes. Under Canada's immigration laws, if there are reasonable grounds to believe a person is complicit in these crimes, entry to Canada must be denied. The test is not whether a person has been convicted, but whether there are reasonable grounds to think they have been involved in such crimes. Even though Canadian officials were referred to the overwhelming evidence of Bush's involvement in torture government officials apparently took no action to bar Bush or commence an investigation. In fact government officials did not even feel the need to bother with the courtesy of a reply to Lawyers Against the War (LAW). LAW plans to consult with peace and justice advocates in Canada and around the world with a view to maximizing the likelihood of successful prosecutions that would be a move toward restoring the rule of law. Many around the world are pressing for proper prosecutions. In the U.S., release of a major complaint alleging war crimes against 31 Bush administration officials prepared by the Robert Jackson Steering Committee is expected in April. This initiative is led by Professor Lawrence Velvel, Dean of the Massachusetts School of Law. A growing number of people completely agree with UN Special Rapporteur Martin Scheinin, who recently said, "We have had a witch hunt for alleged terrorists for the past seven and a half years. . . . Now I think the witch hunt is over and it is time for the law to step in." Prof. Scheinin also said states are under a positive obligation to conduct independent investigations into alleged violations of the right to freedom from torture or other inhumane treatment. John McNamer, 61, is a member of LAW from Kamloops. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal while serving in Vietnam with the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division. © Copyright (c) The Province

Don't Let Bush Enter Canada: Gail Davidson on Keith Olbermann
Canada should bar or prosecute Bush: lawyer Foreign Affairs stays silent on upcoming Calgary visit
As George W. Bush's St. Patrick's Day visit to Calgary draws near, the federal government is facing pressure from activists and human rights lawyers to bar the former U.S. president from the country or prosecute him for war crimes and crimes against humanity once he steps on Canadian soil. Bush is scheduled to speak at the Telus Convention Centre March 17, but Vancouver lawyer Gail Davidson says that because Bush has been “credibly accused” of supporting torture in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Canada has a legal obligation to deny him entry under Canada's Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. The law says foreign nationals who have committed war crimes or crimes against humanity, including torture, are “inadmissible” to Canada. ”The test isn't whether the person's been convicted, but whether there's reasonable grounds to think that they have been involved,” says Davidson, who's with Lawyers Against the War (LAW). “…It's now a matter of public record that Bush was in charge of setting up a regime of torture that spanned several parts of the globe and resulted in horrendous injuries and even death. Canada has a duty.” In February, Davidson sent a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other cabinet ministers asking the Canadian government to either bar Bush from Canada, prosecute him once he arrives, or have the federal attorney general consent to a private prosecution by LAW against the Texan. She hasn't received a response, and concedes she's fighting “an uphill battle” with “terrific challenges.” Davidson laid torture charges against Bush during his visit to Vancouver in 2004, but a judge quashed them within days. The federal government is keeping silent on the upcoming visit. “We have no comments to offer on the visit of Mr. George W. Bush to Calgary,” said Foreign Affairs spokesperson Alain Cacchione in an e-mail to Fast Forward . When told about Davidson's letter, a spokesperson with the Canadian Border Services Agency said “we wouldn't comment on something like that.” Davidson is one of many voices around the world calling for Bush's prosecution. Earlier this year, Manfred Nowak, the UN's Special Rapporteur on Torture, said the U.S. has a “clear obligation” to prosecute Bush and former secretary of defence Donald Rumsfeld for authorizing torture — a violation of the UN Convention on Torture. “Obviously the highest authorities in the United States were aware of this,” Nowak told a German TV station in January. Joanne Mariner, terrorism and counterterrorism director for Human Rights Watch, says that while there's legally “all the reason in the world” to prosecute decision-makers in the Bush administration, “it's a different story” politically. “The Obama administration certainly has not given much in the way of encouraging signals for such a prosecution,” says Mariner, who's based in New York. “Obama has consistently said that he wants to look forward.” Mariner says that while a U.S. justice department investigation is unlikely, a congressional investigation is more probable — and “that could lead to recommendations for prosecution.” Mariner's not expecting a Canadian prosecution against Bush. “Obviously the Canadian government would have to be in favour of it, and that seems rather unlikely,” she says. Calgary activists, meanwhile, are organizing a number of events for the week of Bush's visit, culminating in a noontime rally outside the Telus Convention Centre during Bush's speech. “We want to give him the welcome that he deserves — which is we want him to go back to the States, or we want him arrested,” says organizer Collette Lemieux. Activist Julie Hrdlicka, who visited Iraq twice during the American occupation, agrees. “We need to send a clear message to him that he's not welcome,” she says. Lemieux is hopeful that Bush will eventually be prosecuted. “Do I think that it's going to happen very soon? No,” she says. “But I think that it's very important that we keep the pressure up…. We have to make it clear that there's accountability.” The Plaza Theatre, meanwhile, is screening three Bush-themed documentaries for a “Bush Bash Film Fest” the night of the visit. Half the box office proceeds will go to the United Way.
